Area Units: From Square Meters to Acres
How land, property, and floor space get measured differently around the world.
Area is length, squared — with extra complications
Area units are technically just length units multiplied by themselves, but real estate, agriculture, and land surveying each developed their own specialized units on top of that, which is why area conversion gets more complicated than it sounds.
Metric area units
Square meters handle small spaces like apartments and rooms. Hectares (10,000 square meters) and square kilometers take over for land and geography. The relationships are clean powers of ten, consistent with the rest of the metric system.
Imperial and land-specific units
Square feet dominate US real estate listings. Acres — originally the amount of land a team of oxen could plow in a day — remain the standard for agricultural and rural property, despite having no clean relationship to square feet (one acre is 43,560 square feet).
Where this trips people up
Comparing property listings across countries often means converting square meters to square feet, or square feet to acres, neither of which is an intuitive mental calculation. This is one of the most commonly searched conversions in real estate research.
A useful anchor
A hectare is roughly 2.5 acres. A square meter is about 10.8 square feet. These are rough enough for browsing listings; formal appraisals and legal documents need exact figures.
